Stanciu inspires Romania to victory

Romania recorded their first victory at a European Championship in 24 years with a stunning win over Ukraine in Group E.

Captain Nicolae Stanciu scored a wonderful goal to seal the victory for Romania, who have now won their opening game at a EURO finals for just the second time.

It was a deserved victory for Romania, who were the better side throughout and created the better chances.

They took the lead midway through the first half when Stanciu curled a free-kick into the top corner.

Ukraine pushed for an equaliser in the second half, but Romania defended resolutely and held on for a famous victory.

The win moves Romania top of Group E, and they will now be confident of reaching the knockout stages.
